Anyhow, I appreciated your discussion about your little girl wanting a dog. As much as I love dogs, I will not ever own another dog until all of my children are at least pre-teens.
My two year old was bitten by a family members dog on thanksgiving. It was one snap, but it was enough to require 5 hours of emergency surgery, broken bones, and she will require multiple surgeries to repair/replace the damaged arts of her face and eye. The dog that did this was a good family dog- he was just confused for a moment.
The point it that since this happened, I have read a lot of studies on dog bites (treatment and statistics) and based on findings ( the smaller a child is, the more likely they will get a dog bite, and the more likely it will be in a possibly fatal area of the body) the researchers suggest that parents wait until children are at let 10 years old to get a dog- because all dogs pose a risk and the riskof dog bite virtually disappears after 10 years old.
I think you decision to put off having a puppy is a very wise one- no matter how nice it is to grow up with a dog,the consequences of even one second of confusion o tat dogs part is not worth it!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8581317431133132518.post-80365113033202267302008-12-27T09:24:00.000-06:002008-12-27T09:24:00.000-06:00pageant1I cannot wait to see all the pics!!!! and...pageant1I cannot wait to see all the pics!!!! and on the dog issue, I totally understand that.. my middle child when she was younger had major issues with being in a room with its door closed and things like that. Bedtime was a nightmare.... when she was around 12 we got her a little toy fox terrier and it was just what she needed. For some reason it gave her the strength to close her bedroom door, go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, etc. Every since we got that little dog it has been her best friend. She is now 18 and will be going to college soon. Nothing like hugging a dog to make lifes worries go away :)luanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17618139377925502789noreply@blogger.com
